NDL Presents: Black Lives Matter & Indigenous Sovereignty from the Bay to Bahia
On Friday, March 11, Namorados da Lua (NDL) band, ManoMasa band and La Peña invite the community to honor the resistance and resilience of Indigenous and African communities from the Bay to Bahia. What better way to grow our people power than with celebration, music and dancing?
8 pm - Ohlone leaders Wichacpiluta Candelaria and Anthony Sul will welcome us and open the evening with words, prayer and traditional songs.
8:15 pm - Ras K’DJ set
9 pm - ManoMasa band! From Rio, Bahia, Goiás, & California, this band of transfronteristas weaves together poetry & revolutionary, feminist & folkloric music from Las Américas.
10 pm - NDL (Namorados da Lua). In addition to the Afro-Brazilian reggae, samba-reggae, rock and Afro-funk music that NDL is known for, we are inviting a number of special guests to join us on stage and share their wisdom with us:
Ras K’dee (K’DJ) from AudioPharmacy band and Seventh Native American Generation (SNAG) magazine will DJ and perform as a guest MC. Reverend Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou and Jay-Marie Hill from Rev. Sekou and the Holy Ghost will speak about the Black Lives Matter movement and share a song from their recently released album, “The Revolution Has Come”. Black and Indigenous leader Van Dell will speak about her experience and the vision of Qilombo Oakland / AfrikaTown Community Garden. Latina / Chicana poet, capoeirista and artivista Kaira Portillo will share her poetry / spoken word.
Please join us for these critical conversations while celebrating life, peace and love with Namorados da Lua!
